Music has worked as the lifeline of Indian movies. Since the
Emergence of Bollywood, Musical movies are made more often than any
other Genre. In fact the success of a movie in India largely depends on the music of
the film. It was once said that if songs of a particular movie are hit
then the movie would also be a big hit, No matter how weak its plot or
acting is. There are numerous examples to support this fact. Earlier
Bollywood featured patriotic songs but later on moved to romantic songs,
a trend which is followed even today. Thousands of singers tried their

. Mohammed Raffi:
Calling Mohammed Rafi ‘the face of Indian Music’ won’t be
exaggeration. Rafi debuted in Indian Film Industry in 1945 and in his
long career of more than three and a half decade, he has given voice to
more than 4500 filmy songs. Though Rafi has claimed to sang more than
28000 songs. Rafi mostly gave voice to classical, romantic and patriotic
songs. However he was also loved for his qawaalis and Bhajans. During
his career of more than 35 years Rafi worked with almost all the music
composers and playback singers famous in the industry at the time. He
won numerous awards including filmfare awards and National Film award.

2. Kishore Kumar:
Kishore Kumar was not just a brilliant Playback singer but also a
multi talented person who showed his talents in penning lyrics,
composing songs, directing and producing movies and in acting too. He
also wrote screenplay for few movies. Personally he is my favorite
singer. His trademark Yodeling is now often imitated (but never
duplicated) by other singers. Kishore never thought of becoming a singer
but after his big Brother Ashok kumar become a popular actor, he gave
Kishore a chance in singing. Kishore debuted as a singer in 1951 film
Bahaar and soon became a cult favorite singer. Kishore lent voice to
many actors most notably Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. Every song
featuring Rajesh Khanna and Kishore kumar become a classic hit and is
popular even now. He was also famous for singing duet songs with other
popular singers like Rafi Ji, Mukesh Ji at the time. Kishore never won a
National Film award for best Singer but he holds record for winning
most (8) filmfare awards for best Singer. Here are few of his most

3. Udit Narayan:
Though Udit Narayan was born in Nepal yet his contribution to Indian music could not be neglected. Udit dominated the male
playback singing in 90s and his songs are cult classic. His melodious
voice and style of singing is often imitated by fellow singers. Udit is a
versatile singer and has sung songs in varied local Indian languages
including Bengali, Ooriya, Tamil, Telugu and Sindhi. Since his debut in
1986, Udit collaborated with many music composers and gave voice to
several timeless classic songs. Accept it or not but in 90s, Udit’s
music was main reason behind the success of several blockbuster
movies.Udit worked with all three khans, Specially with Aamir and
Shahrukh. His voice is cited as one of the reasons behind the romantic

Balasubramanyam’s energetic and melodious voice has been entertaining

Oriya, Tamil, Telugu, Malyalam and Bengali. Bala has won several awards
including Filmfare awards and National film Award (for 4 different
languages). Though Bala sung few songs for Bollywood movies, Yet he has

songs for Salman Khan. His baritone voice was perfectly suited for the actor.

initially sung cover of Md. Rafi and Kishore kumar’s songs. However when
he took serious training under the guidance of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa
Khan, he developed his own singing style. Since debuting in the early
90s, Sonu gained a huge fan following specially of younger audience. He
have very good control over his vocal abilities
and has often mimicked several other popular singers perfectly. Apart
from being Singer, Sonu is also a talented actor. Sonu has sung songs in

trained by his father who himself was a vocalist. Kumar began his career
at an early age of 22, however is was not until 1987 that he got his
big break. Initially Sanu struggled for success but as soon as he got offers to sing romantic songs, he soon became fan favorite. In the 90s he dominated the male playback singing. Only Udit narayan was able to gave him competition. Like Udit, His music too played a vital role in the success of film. Sanu is a big fan of Kishore Kumar. Among the Classic Indian singers, Mukesh will always be cited as the
legend. He was among those legendary singers who changed the face of
Indian music in the 60s and 70s. Mukesh never thought of becoming a
singer. However, he liked singing and tried hands in singing. He sang
just for his passion and when he was given a chance to sing song in
feature film he accepted it. His songs soon become popular among Indian
audience. Though Mukesh worked in the industry for more than 3 decades,
He sang only 1600 songs. His fellow singers Kishore Kumar
and Rafi ji collectively sang more than 50000 songs. Mukesh

Sukhwinder singh is probably best known to International audience for his academy award and Grammy award winning song ‘Jai Ho’ from Danny boyle’s Film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Sukhwinder was already popular among Indian audience for giving energetic dance songs
and few romance numbers. Sukhwinder initially started his career from
the cult classic film Karma in 1986. However, he felt that his voice is
still not up to the level. So he trained himself and learned different
forms of music. Sukhwinder returned to Bollywood few years later and got
his big break when A.R. rahman called him to sing song for Mani
ratnam’s Dil Se. The song was a hit and soon Sukhwinder became the

lot. He sang 3500 Jingles before he was given a break in Bollywood. KK
has not only lent his voice in Hindi songs but also sang Tamil, Telugu

Shaan is also a talented music composer and Lyricist and has penned and gave music to his own albums. He collaborated with the band Blue for the hit song “One Love”.
